🛎️ Why Swiggy’s Push Notifications Work Better Than Ads
By Yash Jain, First-Year BA (Hons) Economics Student

“Hey, we’re outside. Just kidding, but your biryani could be.”
That was the push notification I got from Swiggy on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It made me smile and more importantly, it made me open the app.
💡 Ads Get Your Attention.
We all see Swiggy ads on YouTube or Instagram flashy, fun, but also easy to skip. That’s because ads are meant to grab attention, especially from people who haven’t used the app in a while or ever.
But push notifications? They feel like tiny messages meant just for me.
They remind me:
-
It’s lunchtime
-
My favourite snacks are on sale
-
Or sometimes, that I’ve ordered a little too often this week
🧠 The Subtle Genius of a Push
Here’s why I think Swiggy’s push notifications are so powerful:
1. They’re Persona, Sometimes the notification says something like,
“Paneer Butter Masala from your favourite restaurant is 20% off.”
It’s like the app knows what I like — because it does.
2. They’re Well-Timed
I get them around lunch or dinner right when I’m hungry but too lazy to cook. Coincidence? Definitely not.
3. They’re Funny
Swiggy doesn’t talk like a boring app. It jokes, teases, and sounds more like a friend than a brand. That tone makes a big difference.
📱 Growth Isn’t Always Loud
What I’m learning is that growth isn’t just big marketing campaigns. It’s also:
-
A clever notification
-
A well-placed reminder
-
A small nudge that brings users back
Swiggy seems to do this really well — and it shows in how often I, and so many others, end up using it again and again.
🌱 From a Student’s Eyes
As someone who’s just starting to explore the world of growth, Swiggy’s push notifications are a great example of how small, smart moves can create big impact.
It’s not just about getting new users it’s about keeping them engaged, with the right message at the right time. And sometimes, with just the right emoji 🍕.
This is so insightful, love this take !
